We have conceived this canoe holiday as a succession of encounters: with a exquisite natural environment, a rich cultural and historical heritage, and a region of exceptional quality. More than a simple introduction to the delights of paddling your own canoe, the outings are conceived in the same spirit as walking trips: finding the time to explore, to encounter people and places. You'll enjoy freedom of movement, living to the rhythm of the flowing waters, landing here or there to visit a village, board an island to explore, pretend you're Robinson Crusoe and go off in search of Friday on your personal isle-for-a-day!
You may also learn how to recognise beaver tracks, the flight of storks, terns and egrets, or the silhouette of a fox or otter...

River Loire or River Allier?
The Allier is recognised generally as the affluent of the Loire. (i.e. the Allier is the minor river). But when you look at the map, the Loire seems be the affluent of the Allier! So which is the affluent of which? Geography furnishes some elements of a response. At the point of confluence, (the "Bec d'Allier") the Allier has covered 410 km from its source at the foot of the Signal du Moure de la Gardille, altitude 1458 metres. The Loire has flowed 470 km from its source at the foot of the Mont Gerbier de Jonc, 1408 metres. The catchment area of the Allier down to the Bec d'Allier is 14300 km2 and its flow 160 m3/second at that point. Comparative figures for the Loire are: catchment area 17600 km2, mean flow 180m3/second. Conclusion...slight advantage to the Loire. But it does happen that at the confluence the Allier's flow is greater than the Loire's. On one notable occasion, on the 15th September 1975, the Allier in flood was spilling out 3060 m3/second, the Loire only 360m3/second - 8 times less! The jury is considering its verdict! |
