The Gironde department has one of the finest cyclepath networks in France. You can go all the way round the Arcachon basin, which is a sure temptation to do just that!
You'll see grand Atlantic beaches, wild and free, which contrast with the mild waterfront cycleways of Arcachon and its café and restaurant terraces. And then there are once again beaches, calmer this time, in the shelter of an arm of the bay. The route takes you from little port to harbour in a succession of changing colours. And it brings you to the vast Bird Park and the salt meadow nature reserve. You'll enjoy slipping through the pine forest to reach Cap Ferret, but the story doesn't end there. There's also the landing pier and the boat which come to collect you, the sea air of the crossing, and the fabulous panorama of the Bay of Arcachon just coming into sight...

The Bird Park (Parc Ornithologique du Teich)
 The Bird Park at Teich is an unspoilt natural space that has been carefully adapted to receive wild birds and facilitate their observation by a discerning public. 120 hectares (about 300 acres) of forests, reed beds, open fields, sea marshes and lagoons spread from inland right to the sea coasts of the Arcachon basin. This environmental diversity brings with it a large number of bird species, be they sedentary or migratory.There are 260 known species of which 80 nest in the Park. The preservation of some rarer species has given the Park international recognition and respect. Throughout the four seasons marked by changing tones and colours and the incessant flights of wild birds, the Park gives you a unique opportunity to see from close up the wealth of the domain between water and wetlands so necessary to the birds. Set off with family and friends or by yourself to discover the best known of the Arcachon Bay's natural sites. There are 6 kilometres of footpaths and 20 all-weather hides that allow you observe a very large number of species in optimum conditions. A nature walk if ever there was one, from cabin to cabin. |
