The Comtois - a working horse
Since the Roman era there has been written mention of this sturdy small workhorse of impeccable character from the mountains of Franche-Comté. It is thought to have been cross-bred from local mares and stallions from Germanic states. Stallions of the new breed were in turn employed to improve breeds throughout Burgundy, and the Comtois served as mount to jousting knights. Both Louis XIV and Napoleon I in their time adopted the Comtois as warhorse for the cavalry and as dray horse to pull guns and wagons. Alas the successive extractions of mounts from the existing population of horses led to severe shortages in Franche-Comté itself. Only at the beginning of the XX century did a handful of enthusiasts decide to take the breed in hand through rigourous selection of reproductive mares to which small stallions from the Ardennes (with slightly different characteristics and colouring) were led. In 1910, the first concours for breeders took place at Maîche in the Doubs. In 1919, the Union of the Comtois and the stud book of the breed were created. Pride of its region, the Comtois retrieved thus its place in the Franche-Comtois countryside as companion and daily labourer of many a small farmer. |
