The young volcanoes of the Ardèche and the Ardèche Nature Park provide the perfect natural setting in which to find relaxation and renewed health.
You’ll love the judicious combination of pleasant walks and fitness care in a spa whose existence goes back to the Roman era.
Hydrotherapy was highly developed in the Ardèche in the XIX and XX centuries, and owes its existence to the erstwhile volcanic activity in the region. This same activity also gave rise to the grandiose sculpted scenery so typical of the area.

The volcanoes of the Ardèche
The ‘young’ volcanoes of the Ardèche come in two types, the Strombolian and the Maar. They were active between 80 and 15 thousand years ago, so may be considered geological ‘babies’…The Strombolians consist of a chimney from which lava spews forth. In the Ardèche, the lava-flow typically ran down to the valley, breaking a part of the ‘chimney’ on their way. Less well known, Maar volcanoes resulted from the meeting of basaltic magma and a pocket of H2O in the water table, which resulted in a huge explosion. The craters thus created might then be filled by basaltic material or by rainwater forming a lake. It is thanks to this geological wealth that many springs in the Ardèche are reputed for their therapeutic qualities. |
