On the programme, a complete tour of the lake. On first seeing this vast blue expanse many think it's always been there, but it was in fact created in the 1960's. A relative newcomer then in this land of red earth born of sedimentary deposits accumuled some 250 million years ago and whose colour comes from the omnipresence of iron oxides in the soil. Your stay here will be marked by this meeting of reds and blues, water and earth, the geological past which has left its volcanic stamp on the land and the aquatic pleasures of bathing and sailing made possible by more recent developments.
And there's more: the Cirque (corrie) de Mourèze is an amazing place peopled by hundreds of dolomitic rocks of every shape and size. When the sun of the south strikes these sentinels of limestone and magnesium, they become quite simply dazzling.

From April to October.

Red Rocks: the "ruffes"
The basin of the Salagou river is characterized by its colour - a striking ruddy hue caused by the presence of iron oxides. The origin of the rock known as the "ruffes" (from the Latin rufus, red) goes back to the Permian era (end of the Palaeozoic, between 225 and 280 million years ago).

It consists of a thick layer of clay or sandstone sediments laid down in regular sequence which corresponded with phases of drought and flood. The strata have conserved the cracks due to dessication, but also the imprints of reptiles, the most spectacular of which may be seen near Lieude, a hamlet to the west of the village of Salasc.
