Unique, this is a journey which unites the scenic splendour of the countryside with an exploration of the cultural and historic heritage of the Huguenots.
In 1685, Louis XIV of France (the Sun King!) revoked the Edict of Nantes which had provided freedom of religious conscience for almost a century. There followed interdicts and persecutions which were to push perhaps 200,000 protestants towards exile in Switzerland and Germany.
You'll walk along the centuries-old paths - many of them peddlers' ways and even Roman roads - which served as escape routes for the fleeing Huguenots. A visit to the Musée du Protestantisme Dauphinois provides the why and the how of the exodus and you'll also pass through the lovely ancient towns of Dieulefit, Bourdeaux and Die (say 'Dee'), marked then as now by the presence of the protestant faith.
The scenery, superb, combines beauty and variety. From the plain of the Jabron river through the narrower valley of the Roubion, you come to the "Bio Vallée" (region specializing in organic agriculture) of the Drôme. Indeed, in going over these little passes you cross a 'frontier' between Provençal Drôme with its typical flora and fauna and the Drôme Valley where lavender and olives become rare, replaced by beech and oak forests in all their splendour.
The route from Poët-Laval to Die is the first stage of the protestant exodus stretching 1400 kilometres through Switzerland all the way to what was to become today's Germany.

The European project: in the footsteps of the Huguenots.
"Sur les pas des Huguenots" ("in the footsteps of the Huguenots") is a European cooperative venture led by France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
It aims to create an international long distance footpath which traces the road of exile taken between 1685 and 1690 by the Huguenots of the Dauphiné* towards Switzerland and Germany. This exodus was provoked by the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV.
*Historical province of South-east France.

The footpath follows as closely as possible the trails taken by the Dauphinois Huguenots in the late XVII century. It begins in Poët Laval in the Drôme department and goes all the way to Geneva and then Frankfort, finishing at Bad Karlshafen in the north of the Hesse in Germany. The path links the Musée du Protestantisme in Poët-Laval with the German Huguenot Museum in Bad Karlshafen. At 1500 kms it is one of the longest European long distance footpaths!

Safran offers the first stage of this epic journey, in Provençal Drôme, and hopes to be in a position in the future to propose a second stretch which goes from the Drôme to the Isère department.
