Your holiday is between the Tarn and Garonne department and that which is simply known as the Tarn. On one side the Quercy with its landscape of "causses" (rugged limestone plateaux), its rivers and celebrated cuisine, on the other, the region around the city of Albi, with its sloping vineyards, architectural heritage and fortified villages. It's a decidedly occitan area and they will tell you so if you ask, in one of the most distinctive accents of France or indeed in their own language, Occitan!
The theme of your stay is the exploration of mediaeval boroughs, often listed as being among the prettiest in France. The itinerary links the village of Bruniquel with its neighbours Penne, Puycelsi and Larroque. It goes through the forest of Grésigne, green lung of the region, and carries on through the Vère Valley. The routes taken present no major technical difficulty and follow signposted paths. You're sure to love the variety of landscape encountered: walks along riversides and in woodland, strolls around pretty villages along the way, majestic views from high hill paths or along ridges.
And of course your lodgings have been chosen for their friendly and convivial nature.

The Forest of Grésigne
The Forest of Grésigne lying between the vallies of the Aveyron, the Vère and the Cérou is bordered to the north by limestone plateaux and to the south-east by the "causse" of Cordes. In state hands since far back in the XIII century, it is certainly the largest forest in the department with its 3,526 hectares.Furthermore the preponderance of oak trees make it the most extensive oak forest in the south of France. For many long years the forest held an important place in the collective consciousness of the local populations, and it has been a source of greed and conflict over the centuries. But the time has gone, alas, when the forest was considered an indispensable resource for the survival of populations, especially the poor. As for the master glassmakers of the region, they found in the forest a seemingly enless supply of fuel for the fabrication of a once much sought-after blue glass. Today the forest is managed by the state whose policy is to preserve the unique nature of the oak woods. The Grésigne harbours fauna of great variety: deer, boar, smaller mammals and more than a hundred species of nesting birds number among its inhabitants... |
