Micro-adventure: The Art of Escaping Close to Home

voyager à vélo, randonner à pied, voyager en liberté • 29/05/2026

Why traveling close to home is so good for you

We often dream of faraway places. And yet, some of the most beautiful adventures lie just a few hours from home — sometimes in the neighbouring region, the one we drive through without ever stopping. This is the spirit of the micro-adventure: travelling closer, living more intensely, rediscovering the meaning of travel without crossing thousands of kilometres. Here's why it does so much good.

  • Walking along the water

The paradox of the close at hand

It's a curious phenomenon: we sometimes know a foreign capital better than the valley one hour away. The distant fascinates, the close fades. We keep putting off that walk in the nearby massif, that coastline we hear is so beautiful.

And yet, France is one of the most diverse countries in the world for its size. Within a few hours, you can move from Atlantic cliffs to the high plateaus of the Massif Central, from vineyards to mid-mountain forests, from medieval towns to rivers where you can bathe. A change of scene isn't a matter of distance. It's a matter of perspective.

Micro-adventure: a lasting trend

This taste for travelling close to home has a name: micro-adventure. Born in reaction to mass tourism, the idea is simple — go less far, but live more fully. Explore the treasures within reach, often overlooked, over the course of a few days.

Far from being a passing fad, it has become a real way of travelling, driven by three very current desires: the longing for simplicity, the need to disconnect, and a new awareness of the impact of our journeys. We favour the train, the bike, walking. We rediscover that adventure can begin at the end of the street.

Three good reasons to travel close to home

  • 1. Less mental load, more presence

A long journey, connections, time zones, complicated logistics: all of this weighs on us before we even leave. By choosing proximity, we lighten everything. Less travel, less planning, less arrival fatigue. We gain real holiday time — and above all, we arrive with a free mind, ready to enjoy from day one.

  • 2. A true change of scene, without flying

We often forget: you can feel completely elsewhere without leaving France. The far-flung Breton coast, the wide-open spaces of the Vercors, the perched villages of the Quercy or the wild plateaus of the Massif Central offer a complete change of scene. The shift in scenery, light, and rhythm is enough to transport you. And the journey begins on the train itself, when the landscape rolls past and the body slows down.

  • 3. The luxury of simple pleasures

A swim in a turquoise river, a meal of local produce, a warm encounter with a host, a sunset after a day of walking. Micro-adventure puts back at the centre what truly matters: shared time, chosen slowness, the joy of simple things. You come home rested, reconnected to the essentials — and to those who accompany you.

How to get started with peace of mind

The beauty of micro-adventure is that it's accessible to everyone. A few principles to make the most of it:

Choose a destination reachable by train or by a short drive — that's the heart of the approach. Favour a gentle rhythm, with stages that leave time to look around. Travel light, by entrusting the logistics to those who do it professionally. And above all, leave room for the unexpected: a break that stretches on, a spontaneous detour, an encounter.

This is exactly the spirit of our self-guided tours. You pack your bag, reach the starting point, and let yourself be carried. The routes are tested and waymarked by our team, your luggage travels from stage to stage, your accommodation is chosen for its warm welcome, and a support team remains reachable 7 days a week. All you have to do is walk, cycle, slow down.

Adventure awaits, just nearby

This summer, perhaps you don't need to look so far. A neighbouring region, a coastline, a mountain range, a river. A backpack, a bike, or a donkey to carry the youngest's bags. France is full of hidden gems — and some of them are waiting for you, just a few hours from home.
