The circuit begins not far from the Rhône Valley then sweeps into the Provençal Prealps, going from one hilltop village to the next. The theme is developed in each village encountered through panels presenting local history and culture. A short guidebook published for each commune ("parish") enables you to know a little more about each area.

Conviviality and a warm welcome are the bywords of the trip, enhancing the interest of this approach to the places you pass through. As guests you are often invited to dine at your hosts' table and are sure to enjoy their recipes for traditional dishes made with fresh local produce!

  • trying local recipes made with fresh ingredients
  • strolling along narrow streets and cobbled alleys in the pretty villages of the Drôme
  • the lovely pre-alpine Provençal scenery
  • the cosy comfort of your accommodation

Program : Hilltop villages in the Drôme Valley

  • D1 Arrival in Mirmande

The Rhône Valley orchards: cherry, peach and apricot trees.

Dinner and night in guest house with own pool.

  • D2 Around the village of Mirmande

7,7 km with total uphill 250 metres. Difficulty 1/5. Duration around 2hrs50.
This first outing is the simplest of your stay, to get you going.
There's the old village of Mirmande, with its own particular look and lifestyle. The signposts are succinct, which gives you the opportunity to practise your map-reading skills!

Dinner and night at the guest house.

  • D3 From Mirmande to Marsanne

11 km with total uphill 500 metres. Difficulty: 2/5. Duration about 3hrs40.
Now you're getting well away from the tumult of the Rhône Valley, (the busiest transport axis in Europe!)
The path rises progressively. The distant rumble fades as you come to the top of the forest of Mirmande. And as you make your way down the other side you are truly entering the hinterland at the foot of the Pre-Alps of the Drôme.

Dinner and night at 2 star hotel-restaurant in the heart of the village.

  • D4 From Marsanne to Soyans

19,6 km with total uphill of 340 metres. Difficulty 4/5. Duration around 5hrs.
(You can if you wish shorten this stage by vehicular transfer.)
This is the longest stage of the holiday, but not specially difficult.
It offers a broad panoramic view from the plain of Montélimar to the cliffs of the Vercors and the mountains of southern Drôme. And there are no less than two hilltop villages to savour: Marsanne and Auriples le Péage.

Dinner and night at hosts' table and in guest house with pool.

  • D5 Around Soyans

12,8 km with total uphill 450 metres. Level 2/5. Duration about 3 hrs30.
Fine stones and stonework! Note the castle at Soyans, the oak trees along the way are simply superb.
Mainly through the undergrowth, the walk follows a variety of paths, and gives splendid views over Saoû, the mountain of Couspeau and the Vercors range.

Dinner and night in guest house.

  • D6 From Soyans to Bourdeaux

    20,6 km with total uphill 800 m. Level 4/5. Around 5hrs.
A varied itinerary with some stretches through quite unspoilt natural scenery.
Agriculture and husbandry around the farms of the Bourdeaux area activity.
It's worth adding the extension towards Saoû and the Lestang Pass for its astonishing scenery.
Variant: transfer La Répara - Saoû then walk to Bourdeaux. (14 km with 500 m climb, around 4hrs).

Dinner and night in 2 épis guesthouse in the old centre.

  • D7 Around Bourdeaux

    6,8 km with total uphill 170 m. Level 1/5. Duration about 2hrs00.
Wild natural scenery, cliffs and streams. The views are ample reward for the sometimes rather tough uphill parts.

Dinner and night in 2 épis guesthouse in the old centre.

  • D8 If you wish, walk around Bourdeaux. Transport to Mirmande

Departure after breakfast or after walk suggested above.
