Presentation

High above us soars the Mont Ventoux (1909 metres), the "Géant de Provence" that cyclists the world over fear and respect. But there are also innumerable little roads which run hither and thither, weaving their way over the lower slopes of the mountain for the delight of cyclists whose pleasure is more about enjoying the countryside than breaking records!

Small winding roads link vineyards, olive groves, orchards and fields of lavender. Along the way, cyclists making their way through the heart of this austere yet lovely limestone countryside can enjoy exploring typical little villages that surprise by their charm and character.

Every day there's a different outing with new places and faces to see.

Looking for a longer escape? Discover our 8-day stay : At the foot of the Mont Ventoux in 8 days

You'll love

  • exploring the valley of the Toulourenc at the foot of the impressive north face of the Mont Ventoux
  • the perched medieval villages of Brantes, Reilhanette and Montbrun-les-Bains, one of France's prettiest villages
  • arriving on the plateau of Albion, a major centre of lavender cultivation

Program : At the foot of the Mont Ventoux 4 days

  • D1 Arrival in Mollans sur Ouvèze

    Arrival late in the day.

This charming, off-the-beaten-track Provençal village bears witness to a bygone grandeur and has a peaceful atmosphere in every season. Take the time to stroll along the fountains trail and wander the narrow lanes down to the semi-circular washhouse.

Dinner on your own and night in a 3 star hotel with its own pool.

  • D2 From Mollans sur Ouvèze to Sault

36 km stage with total uphill 740 metres (level 3/5). About 4hrs30.

You'll discover the valley of the Toulourenc, following this capricious river that flows at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. If you reach the foot of the hanging village of Brantes around lunchtime or coffee time, treat yourself to the detour up to this perched village and take in the striking view of the Mont Ventoux. Or, a little further on in the flat valley, stop off at Savoillans, a charming village that is home to a renowned inn. A few kilometres on, you'll spot Reilhanette, another perched village standing proudly opposite Montbrun-les-Bains.

You then leave the north face of the Ventoux to enter a landscape transformed by lavender and olive cultivation — a patchwork scented with Provence all the way to Sault.

Dinner on your own and night in a 3 star hotel.

  • D3 Around Sault towards the Gorges de la Nesque or the ascent of the Mont Ventoux

Option 1 — 30 km stage with total uphill 650 metres. About 3hrs.
A route that takes you into the heart of the lavender landscapes and their charming hamlets. You climb up to the viewpoint at Le Rède, the high point of the ride, from where you can contemplate the Mont Ventoux overlooking the Gorges de la Nesque.

Option 2 — 51 km stage with total uphill 1220 metres. About 5 to 6hrs. (Shorter variant available: 40 km, total uphill 700 metres, about 4hrs.)
The ascent of the Mont Ventoux from Sault is the easiest of the three routes, but also the longest. We suggest an out-and-back ride so you can turn back if you're not feeling up to it. A legendary 'hors catégorie' mountain pass, the Mont Ventoux has drawn amateur and professional cyclists alike since the invention of the bicycle! Some of the great pages in the history of the Tour de France have been written on its hairpin bends.

Dinner on your own and night in a 3 star hotel.

  • D4 From Sault to Mollans sur Ouvèze

40 km stage with total uphill 300 metres (level 2/5). About 3hrs30.

One of the pleasures of today's ride is a profile with more downhill than uphill. You'll therefore have time to explore the hilltop village of Montbrun-les-Bains and perhaps treat yourself to a little detour via Buis-les-Baronnies, whose shady terraces have an undeniable charm.

    Departure late in the day.
