Presentation

To follow the Rhône River by bike, simply cycle along the Viarhôna, a beautiful, peaceful cycle route that winds its way along old towpaths. From Geneva to the Mediterranean coast, the route stretches over 800 kilometres, with the river as your companion, sometimes majestic, sometimes silent. This section of EuroVelo 17 connects the lake to the sea, winding between two banks filled with history and passing through iconic cities such as Lyon, Avignon and Sète, where nearly two millennia of heritage can be witnessed at every turn. For this itinerary, Safran Tours has chosen one of its most beautiful sections: the stretch between Condrieu and Avignon, a luminous link between vineyards, villages and lands bathed in the gentle warmth of the Rhône.

Program : The ViaRhona: from Condrieu to Avignon

  • D1 Arrival in Les Roches de Condrieu late afternoon

Upon your arrival in Condrieu, let yourself be charmed by the spectacular views over the Roches de Condrieu and the terraced vineyards overlooking the Rhône. A short stroll along the river or a break in the village will give you a taste of the region’s peaceful atmosphere. Don’t miss a first tasting of the famous Condrieu Grand Cru, an internationally renowned white wine, before heading to your accommodation and getting ready for the next day’s cycling adventure.

Dinner and overnight in a 3-star hotel with a magnificent view of the Rhône.

As an option, we can also arrange an additional night in Lyon, allowing you to enjoy the former capital of Gaul and begin your trip one day earlier.

  • D2 From Les Roches de Condrieu to Tournon sur Rhône

57 km stage - Minimal elevation gain - Estimated duration: 4 hours

This first stage immerses you in the heart of the Rhône Valley vineyards. You’ll follow the peaceful banks of the river, enjoying spectacular views of the Roches de Condrieu, renowned for their impressive granite formations and terraced vineyards. Take advantage of the stops to sample local wines, including the famous Hermitage slopes, while admiring the charming winemaker villages along the way. Your arrival in Tournon-sur-Rhône reveals a harmonious blend of medieval heritage and the gentle rhythm of life by the river.

Dinner and overnight stay in a 3-star hotel in the center of Tournon.

  • D3 From Tournon sur Rhône to Loriol

59 km stage - Minimal elevation gain - Estimated duration: 4 hours

This section takes you through the rolling landscapes of the Ardèche and Drôme, between vineyard-covered hills and quiet country roads. Midway, you will pass through Valence, with its historic center, lively squares, and the gourmet Halles scheduled to open in 2026—an ideal spot for a break, a meal, and a stroll. The ViaRhôna then continues along the Rhône to Loriol-sur-Drôme, a welcoming small town where you can relax before the next stage.

Dinner and overnight stay in a 3-star hotel with a swimming pool.

  • D4 From Loriol to Montélimar

41 km stage - Minimal elevation gain - Estimated duration: 3 hours

This new stage takes you along the right bank, on the Ardèche side. You enter the historic heart of Vivarais, a land of art and history where protected ancient monuments and genuine villages stand proudly side by side.
As you stroll through the peaceful narrow streets lined with stone houses, time seems to slow down. Then Montélimar, the city of nougat, appears, where the Allées Provençales welcome you under their hundred-year-old plane trees.

Dinner at your leisure and overnight stay in a 3* hotel in the heart of Montélimar.

  • D5 From Montélimar to Lapalud

38 km stage - Minimal elevation gain - Estimated duration: 2hours30

Leaving Montélimar, the ViaRhôna takes you along vast plains leading into the Comtat Venaissin, dotted with vegetable crops. The Rhône, dotted with small islands, is home to many birds, and its banks offer a perfect spot for a break amid a wilder landscape. Lapalud, peaceful and welcoming, makes an ideal stop before reaching Avignon. This section charms with its gentle terrain and open views of the river and surrounding hills.

Dinner and overnight stay in a guesthouse.

  • D6 From Lapalud to Avignon

61 km stage - Minimal elevation gain - Estimated duration: 4 hours

The final stage immerses you in the charm of Provence: the Rhône continues to guide you as you pass through fruit orchards, sunflower fields, and Mediterranean groves. The cycle path is mostly safe and easy, providing an ideal route to enjoy the natural scenery and picturesque villages. Arrival in Avignon, a historic city with its famous Pont Saint-Bénézet and the Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a cultural and architectural highlight to conclude your adventure along the Rhône.

Overnight stay with breakfast in a 3-star hotel.

  • D7 End of your stay... or the start of a new adventure

After breakfast, it’s time to board the train back to Roches-de-Condrieu.

If you rented your bikes, you can simply drop them off at the hotel in Avignon. If you’re traveling with your own bikes, we recommend leaving your car in Avignon on the first day, after dropping off your luggage and bikes in Roches-de-Condrieu. A taxi transfer can also be arranged upon request.

And if this trip has captivated you, why not extend your adventure all the way to Arles? At the gateway to the Camargue, a whole new world awaits. We’ll be happy to organize this additional stage for you.
