This South Burgundy cycling itinerary, entirely on cycle paths, invites you on a journey through the history and culture of South Burgundy.
From Chalon sur Saône, the Voie Bleue takes you along the river to Mâcon and its famous wines. In the middle of nature, you'll appreciate the calm of the Saône and the many birds it shelters. Halfway along the route, you'll stop off at Tournus, a town with a rich historical heritage and colorful facades. The rest of the journey takes you along the Voie Verte, a former railroad line now converted into a cycle path. You'll discover the town of Cluny, famous for its national horse stud and abbey founded in 910.

Cycling from Chalon-sur-Saône to Tournus

Your first day's cycling begins on the Voie Bleue route. This waterside cycle path offers calm, relaxing landscapes that you'll never tire of. Through fields and vineyards, you'll catch glimpses of barges sailing up the Saône.
The arrival at Tournus will not leave you indifferent. Known for its Saint-Philibert Abbey, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, this lively medieval town welcomes you for the night.

Cycling from Tournus to Cluny
61 km - Duration about : 5h
You continue along the wild Saône, home to numerous species of birds such as storks and kingfishers.... Past Mâcon, you leave the river behind and return to the vineyards. This cycling route takes you to Europe's longest tunnel reserved for cyclists. At 1.6 km long, it's a former railway tunnel. A unique experience!
In the distance, the three bell towers of Cluny Abbey come into view. This edifice is an impressive testimony to medieval architecture and a must-see for all history lovers. This equestrian city is also famous for its horse stud and the many horse shows that take place there. The town is full of little streets to visit, so you'll have plenty to do in the evening.

Cycling from Cluny to Chalon-sur-Saône
51 km - Duration about : 4h30
The bike route takes you first through the forest. We recommend a stop at Château de Cormatin. Surrounded by its moat and several hectares of parkland, it's set in a pretty, authentic village whose streets you'll love strolling through. Wander around the gardens at your own pace, or opt for a guided tour to learn all about the history of the place.
Continue north. There's nothing more pleasant than cycling through the hills of Burgundy, with their sublime views over the vineyards. You'll follow the railroad line back to Chalon-sur-Saône and your accommodation for the night.
